On December 10th, LOMARTOV joined the international water research community at Water Projects Europe 2024, part of the renowned Water Knowledge Europe conference held in Brussels. This key event united 70 experts from scientific, policy, and industrial sectors to tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

The conference centered on advancing innovative solutions to water contamination, with a spotlight on the SCENARIOS project. Prof. Francesco Dondero, SCENARIOS coordinator, presented groundbreaking developments in detecting and removing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from groundwater, showcasing methods with enhanced efficiency and sustainability.

LOMARTOV played a key role in addressing the socio-economic dimensions of environmental contamination. Mihaela Mirea, Senior Project Manager, and Jan Klenner, Sustainability Technologist, presented a Social Life Cycle Assessment, highlighting the broader impacts of living in PFAS-contaminated environments. Their insights stressed the ripple effects of contamination, from psychological stress to economic burdens and social inequalities, emphasising that while remediation comes at a cost, the price of inaction is far greater.

Mihaela further enriched the dialogue by participating in a panel discussion exploring policy needs and research priorities. She underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the urgency of translating research breakthroughs into actionable solutions.

Reflecting on the event, Mihaela stated:
“I enjoyed the panel discussion where I had the chance to share insights from the SCENARIOS Project’s workshop in September: an industry-driven marketplace for tailored remediation solutions and the need to accelerate technological innovation within the research community.”
