On 9 July, LOMARTOV organised and moderated the webinar “Sustainability in Focus: BATT-BRIDGE Projects – Assessing Recycling Processes for a Circular Battery Value Chain”, bringing together more than 50 representatives from research, industry and the wider European innovation ecosystem.

Held within the BATT-BRIDGE initiative, the webinar provided a platform for experts from six Horizon Europe projects — CIRCUBATT, HighMag, RENOVATE, REVITALISE, ReUse and STREAMS — to exchange knowledge on how emerging battery recycling technologies can be assessed, validated and further developed towards industrial deployment.

Assessing sustainability beyond carbon footprint

The discussions focused on the methodologies being applied across European battery projects to evaluate the environmental, economic and social performance of innovative recycling pathways. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), circularity assessment and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approaches were among the key topics addressed during the session.

The exchange highlighted the importance of taking a comprehensive view of sustainability when assessing new recycling technologies, considering not only carbon emissions but also factors such as resource efficiency, energy and water consumption, circularity, toxicity and social impacts.

Participants also discussed some of the challenges that can affect the reliability and comparability of sustainability assessments, including limited availability of high-quality industrial data, uncertainty in modelling assumptions and the difficulty of translating laboratory results into industrial-scale applications.

Connecting research, industry and sustainability

As Communication and Dissemination leader of RENOVATE, LOMARTOV played a central role in bringing the different projects together and facilitating the exchange of expertise throughout the webinar.

The event demonstrated the value of collaboration across European R&I initiatives, particularly in a rapidly developing sector such as batteries, where common methodologies, shared knowledge and closer links between research and industry can help accelerate the transition towards more sustainable technologies.

The webinar concluded with a discussion on the importance of transparency, stakeholder engagement and harmonised sustainability approaches in supporting the future deployment of circular battery technologies.

By creating spaces for knowledge exchange between projects, researchers, industry and other stakeholders, initiatives such as BATT-BRIDGE contribute to strengthening a more circular, resilient and competitive European battery value chain.
