On December 10th, the RESPECT project hosted an insightful event titled “Critical Raw Materials Act: Dream or Reality? Perspectives from the RESPECT project” in Brussels and online. This hybrid event gathered key industry experts, policymakers, and researchers to address the ambitious goals of the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and the challenges of building a secure, sustainable, and circular European Li-ion battery manufacturing industry.

The discussions revolved around the innovative solutions developed by the RESPECT project to advance green and efficient Li-ion battery recycling, aiming to bridge the gap between CRMA aspirations and on-the-ground realities. Key topics included the Circular Economy Regulation and its impact on critical raw materials for Li-ion batteries, policy recommendations, and fostering collaboration across sectors.

As a proud partner of the RESPECT project, LOMARTOV plays a key role in conducting a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of emerging battery recycling technologies and commit to sustainable innovations.

During the event, Enrique Moliner, Senior Sustainability Technologist at LOMARTOV, delivered a presentation titled “Current State-of-Play of LIB Recycling: Sustainability Hotspots.” This session provided an in-depth look at:

  • End-of-life pathways for spent lithium-ion batteries, focusing on pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical recycling technologies.
  • Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for different battery chemistries, such as Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt and Lithium-Iron-Phosphate.
  • Regional sustainability insights across Europe, China, and the US, highlighting how recycling practices differ and their respective impacts.

The presentation emphasised the dual value of material recovery, particularly for critical raw materials, and the environmental trade-offs associated with recycling technologies.

In addition to his presentation, Enrique participated in a panel discussion exploring how RESPECT’s findings can support evidence-based policymaking at the European level. These discussions underscored how LOMARTOV’s cutting-edge LCA services contribute to creating actionable insights that align technological innovations with sustainability goals.

LOMARTOV’s expertise in Life Cycle Assessment ensures that novel technologies, such as those developed under RESPECT, are environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. By integrating LCA, we help projects translate their solutions into sustainable innovations that align with European policy priorities and market needs.

Stay tuned for updates on how LOMARTOV continues to drive sustainable innovation!
