On the 5 May, experts from across Europe’s battery ecosystem gathered in Milan for the RENOVATE Clustering Workshop, “Circular Batteries: Pathways for an Integrated Value Chain in Europe”, an event organised by LOMARTOV, leader of the project’s Dissemination and Communication activities, together with project coordinator INSTM and hosted by AFIL at Innovhub SSI facilities.
Bringing together more than 80 participants both onsite and online, the workshop provided a collaborative forum where researchers, industry representatives, policymakers and innovation stakeholders explored the challenges and opportunities involved in building a more circular, sustainable and resilient European battery value chain.
Connecting research, industry and policy
Designed to encourage dialogue across the entire battery ecosystem, the workshop addressed some of the key topics shaping the future of battery technologies in Europe, including circularity, sustainability, critical raw materials, market uptake and the evolving regulatory landscape.
The programme combined high-level policy perspectives with presentations from several Horizon Europe projects working on complementary battery innovations. Participants exchanged knowledge on emerging technologies, responsible resource management, manufacturing, recycling, and circular business models, highlighting the importance of collaboration in accelerating Europe’s energy transition.
A dedicated roundtable further enriched the discussions by bringing together representatives from European institutions, research organisations and industry to debate current barriers, future opportunities and the actions needed to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in the battery sector.
Building synergies across European initiatives
One of the workshop’s main objectives was to reinforce collaboration between projects addressing different stages of the battery value chain. Alongside RENOVATE, several Horizon Europe initiatives presented their latest developments, demonstrating how complementary research efforts can collectively support the transition towards more sustainable battery systems.
Participants also contributed to discussions on policy priorities, skills development, standardisation and research needs, while an interactive working session encouraged stakeholders to identify common challenges and define shared priorities for the future of the sector.
As organisers and moderators of several sessions throughout the day, the LOMARTOV team facilitated dialogue between diverse stakeholders, fostering knowledge exchange and helping create new opportunities for collaboration across Europe’s battery innovation ecosystem.
