The carbon footprint of an organisation is a key environmental indicator that measures all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from both direct and indirect activities. This indicator is not only valuable for internal management and promoting sustainable practices, but also plays a crucial role in the global fight against climate change.

Until 2024, calculating the carbon footprint of an organisation in Spain was voluntary. However, with the new Royal Decree Project that modifies the previous 163/2014 Royal Decree, it will become mandatory for certain organisations to calculate their carbon footprint, develop a reduction plan, and publicly report these figures. These new obligations will come into effect on January 1, 2025, and will affect companies with more than 250 employees, total assets exceeding €20 million, or an annual turnover exceeding €40 million. Additionally, some autonomous communities, such as the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, may impose additional requirements.
