Sustainability took center stage at the M19 General Assembly of the Sustain-a-Print (SAP) project held in Sedgefield, UK. Ignacio Zurano, Sustainability Technologist at LOMARTOV, led the third ecodesign session as part of Task 7.3, aimed at ensuring the environmental responsibility of SAP.
The session brought together partners to discuss and assess various ecodesign actions to achieve the environmental sustainability objectives envisioned for the SAP printed electronics. Here’s a glimpse into the session’s key discussions and outcomes:
- Exploring Innovative Materials: Partners delved into the feasibility of using Copper Nanoparticles as an alternative to conventional ink gold/silver, as well as local and affordable materials to minimise transportation impact.
- Promoting Sustainability in Production: Considerations included the use of solvents sourced from renewable sources, binders derived from waste feedstock, and flow chemistry manufacturing techniques to reduce environmental footprint.
- Biodegradability and Recyclability: Discussions revolved around the adoption of biodegradable substrates and compostable substrates, along with exploring avenues for recycling materials such as domes and gold.
- Technological Innovations: Touch sensor technology without the need for a dome, and the utilisation of high aspect ratio materials to achieve percolating at lower loading were also explored for their environmental benefits.
Following a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach, partners prioritised these ecodesign actions based on their technical, regulatory, economic, commercial, and environmental viability. This exercise enabled the establishment of a clear roadmap with defined priorities and timelines for the implementation of ecodesign actions.
