At LOMARTOV, we are dedicated to fostering social acceptance for sustainable innovations. As part of the NENU2PHAR project, last year we co-hosted an impactful workshop focused on the social acceptance of biobased plastics.
Over 70 experts, industrials, and stakeholders from the biobased plastic field gathered on April 4-5, 2023, at IPC Centre Technique Industriel de la Plasturgie et des Composites in Alençon, France. The event featured presentations and discussions on the challenges and future of PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates).

Our workshop, developed under Task 8.4 of the project, aimed to identify the optimal conditions for the acceptability and commercialisation of biobased plastics, specifically PHA products. Participants included researchers, industry professionals, and final consumers, with policymakers, also considered a supporting group.
The key objectives of the workshop were:
- Identifying conditions for acceptability and commercialisation.
- Evaluating obstacles and supporting arguments for acceptance.
- Understanding stakeholder needs, motivations, and stress points.
- Adapting innovation and communication strategies to user needs.
The participatory process allowed for the co-creation of impact indicators influencing the adoption of biobased plastics. The workshop validated and fine-tuned obstacles and challenges in PHA adoption, highlighting the need for clear communication, efficiency in applications, end-of-life considerations, and legislative support.
